Things to Do an See in Helsinki

Helsinki Zoo, known as "Korkeasaari" among Finns, is one of the oldest zoos in the world (founded in 1889). In Helsinki Zoo you'll meet animals from the arctic tundra to the tropical rainforest. Approximately 200 different animal species reside in the Zoo, and there are almost a 1000 different plant species.

The National Museum of Finland illustrates Finnish history from prehistoric times to the present day. Workshop Vintti on the third floor is an interactive exhibition especially designed for children, where visitors can study the history of Finland and its culture using their hands and heads.

Olympic stadium, built in 1938 the stadium was designed in functionalistic style. The Olympic Games were held in 1952 in Helsinki. Today the Olympic Stadium hosts both national and international sporting events and concerts.

Esplanande Park Situated in the heart of Helsinki, the Esplanade serves as a promenade for tourists and a place to relax for city residents. The park and the Espa Stage host many popular events, including the Marimekko Fashion Show and raising of the midsummer pole accompanied by folk dancing in June and the Jazz-Espa concert series on weekdays throughout July.

Linnanmäki, The amusement park has an enormous selection of fun rides, from ultra-scary to more easy-going. The special wooden rollercoaster is over 50-years-old and remains the most popular ride.

Helsinki Climate

The summer in Helsinki is bright with up to 19 hours of daylight per day. Autumn is cool and the hours of daylight become noticeably shorter. The winter begins in either November or December depending on the year. The average temperature between December and February is around -4°C. The coldest time of the year is usually at the end of January, when the mercury can fall to below -15°C and the ground is covered by snow. Spring arrives in Helsinki usually sometime in April. The days grow rapidly longer and warmer, attracting people to the city while the nature blossoms all around.
